Where Aesthetics Meets Science & Artistry

Fade Sun Spots and Even Out Your Skin Tone

Sun spots, dark patches, and uneven pigmentation do not have to be permanent. At Root Hair and Skin, our advanced IPL technology targets pigmentation at its source, helping you reveal clearer, more even toned skin.

The Concern

Years of sun exposure, hormonal changes, and natural aging can cause melanin to build up unevenly in the skin. This shows up as sun spots (also called age spots or solar lentigines), dark spots and patches, uneven or blotchy skin tone, melasma related discoloration, and post inflammatory marks left behind from acne or injury. These concerns are most visible on the face, neck, chest, and hands. Topical products can help prevent further pigmentation and maintain results, but visible, lasting improvement often requires a treatment that works beneath the surface.

Recommended Treatment
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) using the Stellar M22 XPL platform is the primary recommended treatment for pigmentation and sun spots. If skin texture, enlarged pores, acne scars, or fine lines are also a concern, a provider may recommend adding ResurFX laser resurfacing to the plan. This is confirmed during consultation.
What to Expect

Downtime

Minimal downtime. Most patients return to normal activities with appropriate sun protection the same day, with temporary redness and, in some cases, a few days of treated spots appearing slightly darker before flaking or fading.

Consultation

Skin is evaluated and goals are discussed to confirm whether IPL, or IPL combined with ResurFX, is the right approach.

Treatment

A customized IPL session is performed, with settings tailored to skin type and the depth and severity of the pigmentation.

Sensation

Most patients describe a warm snapping or prickling sensation during treatment. Generally well tolerated.

Recovery

Mild redness is common. Treated spots often appear temporarily darker before flaking or fading. This is expected and part of the process.

Results

Most patients need a series of treatments to achieve visible, lasting results, with maintenance sessions as needed.

FAQ
Will my sun spots come back?
New pigmentation can form with future sun exposure, which is why daily sun protection is an important part of maintaining results.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients need a series of sessions to see full results. The exact number depends on the severity of pigmentation and is discussed at the time of the consultation.
Is IPL painful?
Most patients tolerate IPL well and describe the sensation as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band against the skin.
Is IPL safe for all skin tones?
Suitability depends on skin type and the nature of the pigmentation. XPL IPL can be used in Fitzpatrick skin types I-V while ResurFX can be used in Fitzpatrick skin types I-VI. This is assessed individually at consultation.
Will I need ResurFX in addition to IPL?
Not always. IPL is the primary treatment for pigmentation and sun spots. ResurFX may be added if texture, fine lines, acne scars, or pore appearance are also a concern.
